What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release is a comprehensive hands-on approach for the whole body. Myofascial Release was developed by John F. Barnes, PT, over 40 years ago, as a result of an injury. Gentle application of sustained pressure into the restricted fascia is performed to relieve pain and dysfunction. Effective Myofascial Release treatment allows the body to regain normal tissue tension and function, while facilitating the client in their healing process. Release of fascial restrictions requires holding the techniques for a minimum of 90 to 120 seconds. A skilled therapist will follow the fascial restrictions by holding the techniques for 5 to 10 minutes, allowing the gelatinous component of the fascial system to "melt like taffy." Fascial restrictions can be caused by trauma, inflammation, posture, and stress. Fascial tissue can become restricted and begin to pull throughout the body causing pain, decreased range of motion, headaches, poor posture, increased tissue tension, and many other problems. What is Fascia? Fascia is the ground substance or connective tissue that surrounds every cell in the body, down to the cellular level, in a three-dimensional web from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Normal, healthy fascia has a consistancy of gelatinous material. Injured and restricted fascia can have a tensile strength of 2000 pounds/square inch, which can put pressure on sensitive structures. This pressure can put pressure on the system and bind down the body's ability to function normally. Fascial restrictions do not show up in any of the standard tests (i.e. x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, myelograms, etc.) Who needs Myofascial Release? Anyone who has experienced trauma, inflammation, and stress in their life. Basically, everyone! Home Services About Me Contact Me |
